Study Abroad

Each year over a thousand University of Iowa undergraduates study abroad – about 20% of the undergraduate community.  With programs in more than 50 countries, students have opportunities to study practically anywhere in the world.   The Theatre Arts Department strongly supports study abroad. Theatre students have participated in programs in England, France, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Brazil, Mexico and other countries.  We work closely with our students to help arrange their course work so they can complete their degrees on time.

London Performance Study

This one-of-a kind program is designed to provide students with an intensive introduction to theatre in London, with English and Theatre Arts majors receiving credit towards the major.  London Performance Study is also open to interested non-students. The course is worth 3 s.h. of credit.  The program is offered by the University of Iowa Departments of English and Theatre Arts and the Office for Study Abroad.

Academic Program
London Performance Study will introduce participants to issues in British Theatre, past and present. While in England, students will attend class in the mornings and, in the evenings, attend plays relevant to the course, selected by the accompanying UI professor.  Approximately 11 productions will be chosen and will range from the classic repertory to contemporary plays and musicals, including 1 or 2 plays at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

Excursion to Stratford-upon-Avon
In addition to theater productions in London, the program includes a visit to Stratford-upon-Avon, where participants will attend performances by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Related Activities
Other London activities may include a backstage tour (i.e. at the Royal National Theatre or Shakespeare’s Globe), workshops, and a variety of other cultural and social activities. A break planned midway through the program will allow brief travel in England or to the continent.
