David L. Thayer
For more than 40 years, David held leadership positions in the Theatre Arts Department. He served as head of both the Design and Theatre Technology programs; Production Manager for all the Performing Arts units; as department consultant for the planning of the Theatre Building (and several other University buildings); and as Chair of the Department.
As an artist, he has designed lighting for world premiere productions of 21 plays, 7 operas, more than 100 dances, and over 150 other productions. He continues to design one or two productions each year.
David was instrumental in establishing design as a central element in the American College Theatre Festival, and in 1997 was honored with the Kennedy Center/ACTF Gold Medallion for Lifetime Service. One of the University of Iowa Theatres was named in his honor.
