We are sad to report that Emeritus Professor David Schaal died on July 12, 2016. David was a member of the department faculty for many years, teaching courses in theatre history, play analysis and directing. He served as the primary mentor for doctoral students and directed productions by many of the great classical playwrights. He and his wife, Jean, endowed two funds which provide scholarships for students in directing and playwriting. In addition, they supported the work of design students and gave generously to the department’s general fund. David was a man of great integrity -- thoughtful, courageous and caring. We will miss him.
As a member of the University of Iowa faculty, David taught courses in theatre history, theory, play analysis, and directing; supervised 21 doctoral dissertations in theatre and film; and directed plays by Albee, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Ben Johnson, Shaw, Sheridan, Moliere, Jarry, Brecht, Durrenmatt, and others. Active in the American Theatre Association, he chaired the Rare Books Project (1962-1969) and was editor of the Theatre Journal (1969-71).
In 1975, he was a guest director at the Istanbul Municipal Theatre, Turkey. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Hawaii, the University of Missouri, and Indiana University.
