The Flood

2008 Flood

In the spring of 2008 the Iowa River rose to historic levels (16’ above flood stage). Water filled the basement of the Theatre Building and was within 6 inches of breeching our first floor and theatres. The department moved to temporary quarters while the Theatre Building was repaired, returning in January 2009, with full use of our theatres and classrooms.

Twenty-four buildings were compromised, including the entire Arts Campus.  The School of Art and Art History and Hancher Auditorium were rebuilt near their original locations. Our Costume Shop is currently located next door in the Old Museum of Art Building.
