Theatre Arts has about 200 undergraduate majors and 47 graduate students in the department, with many other students also taking our classes and participating in our productions. With ~25 productions each year, there are hundreds of acting opportunities and many options for students who want to work behind the scenes (as a designer, stage manager, board op, run crew or in the shops).
Theatre Arts at Iowa is big enough to have something going on all the time, yet small enough so people really get to know one another.

Remembering David Schaal
Emeritus Professor of Playwriting & Dramatic Literature
We are sad to report that Emeritus Professor David Schaal died on July 12, 2016. David was a member of the department faculty for many years, teaching courses in theatre history, play analysis and directing. He served as the primary mentor for doctoral students and directed productions by many of the great classical playwrights. He and his wife, Jean, endowed two funds which provide scholarships for students in directing and playwriting. In addition, they supported the work of design students and gave generously to the department’s general fund. David was a man of great integrity -- thoughtful, courageous and caring. We will miss him.
Music/Theatre Double Major
Looking to combine your ability/interest in theatre & dance or theatre & singing? The Departments of Theatre Arts, Dance and Music have joined forces to offer two tracks for students to train in Musical Theatre. By choosing a Voice Emphasis or Dance Emphasis, students focus their undergraduate training towards a career in Muscial Theatre.
