By Mary Hamilton
Directed by Mary Beth Easley
Shakespeare begins Act 4 of The Winter’s Tale with a monologue from “Time,” recapping the 16 years that pass between Acts 3 and 4. In 16 Winters, University of Iowa Playwriting alum Mary Hamilton imagines the journey that each character takes during this enchanted gap in time. To cope with his midlife crisis, King Leo, alongside the ghost of his son, fronts a dad-rock jam band. Escaped from the kingdom, Queen Her and Pauly retreat to the forest and contemplate a life without men. Refusing to follow in their parent’s footsteps, a group of teenagers schemes to shake up the world as we know it. Filled with music, love in all forms, cases of mistaken identity, a bear, and plenty of hashtags, 16 Winters asks if it’s possible to eliminate oppression to make way for a more equitable future.
